Companies who want to “be the best at what they do best” understand that creating and sustaining value for their company, customers and shareholders requires them to define a compelling vision, develop a well-defined plan, reshape their processes and engage people to make it so. Although some companies have put these components in place, many have not linked them together to drive sustainable change. Everyday Excellence (e²) Consulting helps you achieve your goal of being the best at what you do best by providing solutions that result in sustainable process and culture change.
Critical components – perfectly synchronized – driving value for your company and your customers.
Having a clear and purposeful vision that defines excellence in terms of what you do best sets the stage for success. It is important to evaluate organizational behaviors to assure that cultural norms will support the future vision. The vision should be inspirational and describe the future state in terms of results and behavior. This allows employees to build strategies and processes with excellence in mind. But a vision is just a set of words unless it is brought to life by passion. Passion is defined as a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something. It provides limitless energy that fuels action, drives learning and instills motivation. Achieving your vision through everyday excellence is hard work because it requires change. Changing processes – changing the way people think – changing the way you interact with colleagues. Implementing change, even on a good day is extremely difficult and takes a great deal of time and energy – the kind that can only be fueled by a passion for excellence. VISION is the first and foundational gear in the Everyday Excellence (E2) Model. This is by design as a purposeful VISION fueled by passion is the only thing that has the power to inspire and align an organization to make the changes needed to achieve everyday excellence.
Next a PLAN that defines high level goals that align with the vision and describes the strategy for transforming the organization from the current state to the future state must be developed and embraced. Once established and effectively communicated, leadership at all levels must embrace and own the plan, exhibit new leadership behaviors needed to transform the organization and help each and every employee understand how what they do everyday contributes to achieving the plan. This will begin the process of employee engagement which happens to be the foundation of the PEOPLE gear that serves to drive the sustainable changes needed to achieve everyday excellence.
The most critical (and often overlooked) element to sustained transformation is PEOPLE. People with the skills, knowledge and passion to reshape processes to achieve your goals and make everyday excellence the way you work. People are at the heart of the Everyday Excellence Model. Without their engagement, it is nearly impossible to achieve excellence. What drives employee engagement? Research indicates that a sense of purpose, clear goals linked to a vision, consistent communication and feedback, recognition and employee development are some of the key employee engagement drivers. For the most part, people want to make a difference. They want to be part of something big – something that gives them purpose and meaning. And they want to be noticed and appreciated for their contributions. It sounds simple but it is probably no surprise that many companies are struggling when it comes to employee engagement. A January 2016 survey by GALLUP indicated only 32.5% of employees in the American workplace are ‘engaged’ meaning they work with passion and feel a profound connection to their company. GALLUP also found that 51.9% were present at work but not inspired and 15.7% were actively disengaged. So what does this have to do with Everyday Excellence? Everything. Employee engagement has been proven to boost individual, team and operational performance and is foundational to creating a culture of excellence. Engaged employees are enthusiastic about and committed to their work. With the right tools and skills, they quickly become the catalyst for change. Too many companies skip this important step and then wonder why their improvement efforts stall.
Once you have a PLAN and engaged PEOPLE who are passionate about achieving your VISION, you are ready to start building and deploying well performing, efficient PROCESSES that will deliver excellence everyday. Improving complex processes can be a daunting task. That is why improvement gurus invented process improvement tools. There are tools to help define what is critical to excellence based on your vision and goals, how to prioritize processes so you improve the most relevant ones first, how to map processes to identify non-value steps and bottlenecks and how to implement process changes while precluding unintended consequences. So this brings up several questions such as:
Question: Who decides what processes need to be improved? Answer: Leaders (with employee input)
Question: Who improves the processes? Answer: The people closest to the work.
Question: How do they do that? Answer: You teach them process improvement tools
Question: How long does that take? Answer: A few days
Question: If it’s that simple, why doesn’t everyone do it? Answer: I don’t know
Every employee should have process improvement skills. It helps them see things differently, think differently and look for ways to make things better in a ‘bold’ way. Having efficient and effective PROCESSES is the ‘action’ gear in the Everyday Excellence Model and serves as the link to achieving your PLAN.
Critical components, perfectly synchronized driving value for your company and your customers.
