When companies embark on a business transformation initiative, most have a vision of what success will look like. It might be better quality products, improved cycle time, cost reduction, globalization or maybe achieving an overall culture of excellence. Whatever the vision, there is nothing more disappointing than finding out that after years of doing everything on the “transformation to-do list,” the transformation has not materialized.
Eventually the finger pointing will start. Were the improvements made not the right ones? Were people not committed or working fast enough? Did we measure the wrong thing? Why have other companies been successful? Leaders will want to know the answer to these and numerous other questions which will lead them to the same ultimate question of “What is the secret to a successful transformation effort?”
The answer is not a secret at all but only requires that leaders take a long hard look in the mirror. Yes, the mirror. The ultimate success of any transformation initiative is a direct reflection of the leader’s vision, passion and engagement.
